COLONIAL
America annexed all lands between the Perdido River and the Mississippi River away from Spain in 1813 during the War of 1812 with Britain.

ANTEBELLUM
The early 1900s saw rapid expansion in the agrarian community across an area referred to as the “Perdido Country.” Root crops such as Cassava were cultivated with tremendous success across the region. Cassava was used chiefly as an abundant and easy to produce stock feed, but was also the raw material from which starch and tapioca were made. Four large factories in Florida processed Cassava for surrounding farmers.
