THREATS
WATER QUALITY
In the Alabama River Basin, logging and mining activities
were cited as causes for impairments in the basin. Similar impairments,
including high concentrations of metals and low pH values attributed to
mining activities were described for the Cahaba River Basin (Corps, '98).
IMPAIRED STREAMS /
SECTIONS
41 miles of streams in the Alabama basin only
partially support their designated use. On the Alabama River, water quality
indicators such as dissolved oxygen and biochemical oxygen demand have shown
trends indicative of degrading conditions.
(Corps, '98)
There
are some shoaling effects (sediment deposition where the velocity of water
is slowed by a downstream impoundment) approximately 48 river miles upstream
from the R.F. Henry Lock and Dam (Corps '98).
There
is erosion occuring at Claiborne
Lake and banks are being undercut due to the periodic
fluctuations in the reservoirs water levels (Corps ' 98).
